1. Carson.
I have been involved in many different types of leadership professional development classes over the years where we have rated ourselves as well as requested 360 degree feedback (feedback from boss, peers, and direct reports) and it always helps to solidify strengths and developmental areas to improve as well as mitigate any blind spots. Northouse (2018) provides the LTQ to measure personal leadership characteristics and the trait approach provides valuable information about leadership.
My greatest strength is being persistent, almost to a fault. I think this comes from who I am deep down as a person, raised on a farm where hard work was expected and then I was Military trained to accomplish the mission no what the cost and this has carried into my civilian career as well, I just have to be mindful that it is such a strong drive. This strength is always at odds with my weakness. I perceive my greatest weakness to be sensitivity, showing tolerance, is tactful, and sympathetic. I do think I am empathetic, but I can be very direct. I walk fast, I talk fast, and sometimes I move too fast for my audience and I can leave them feeling crushed, even though in my mind I was delivering a message softly. So many times you hear leadership seminar’s, motivational books, and even the meme community all tell you to soar with your strengths and be true to who you are and I am, I just really do care about my perception among my team so I have learned I can be me, I just need to remember to do a couple things. First, I work really hard on the relationships, I’m very open, I love talking about life outside work, and I focus really hard on showing the team I care. By doing this, when I move fast on initiatives they know I am not attacking them directly, that I am a real person who cares about them, but they also know that I am competitive and have high standards. I also strive to always connect my success to my team’s success and this has really helped me immensely. They know that I will push them hard towards a goal, but then I give them all the credit, always cc the right people to showcase my crew, and I have made a name for myself within my organization for promoting and developing top talent.
So I have found I am able to still lead with my strength, but I do have to be mindful of my opportunity- especially if I’m meeting a new team or leading folks I am not normally working daily with.

Northouse (2018). Discusses many studies that have been done throughout the 20th century related to how different traits influence leadership. In looking through the Leadership Trait Questionnaire (LTQ), I feel that my greatest strength is persistence. When I start a project or am placed on a task, I do not stop until it is completed 100%. No matter what obstacles get in my way, I find a way to overcome them. This past year, I was asked to take over as the Director of Security and Emergency Management after working for our hospital as an Emergency Room nurse for almost 15 years. I took this opportunity as a means for growth both personally as a challenge for something new and professionally to advance towards my goals of healthcare leadership. Since taking this position, I worked feverishly to turn it around and get the department back on track, decreasing the overtime by 90%, implementing policies and procedures that were desperately lacking and boosting the morale of the department as well by providing them what they wanted in the means of communication and structure. My persistence also flows over into my education, since starting school and being in this position, I have been faced with some major disasters. Our community had one of the largest wildfires in California history in 2018 that burned into or community, causing our hospital to nearly need to be evacuated. This year, well we all know it’s all about Coronavirus, and hospitals are overwhelmed preparing to care for what’s to come. Throughout all of this and working 14+ hour days, I keep pushing towards my goals of education.
I would have to say my greatest weakness has to be a tie between self-confidence and self-assurance. I am my own worst enemy and never feel that I do good enough at something or feel that I am qualified for whatever I go after. I have been told that I was turned down for many positions because I do not speak highly enough of myself during the interviews. I am extremely humbled and feel that all that I do is just a part of my job. This is something I have been working hard at correcting in myself the past few years by writing down all my accomplishments from the previous year when I have to do my self-evaluation at work. This past year, when my two bosses gave me my annual review, they stated that they are almost embarrassed to be called my boss because I make them look bad with everything, I am able to accomplish throughout the year. this was definitely a morale booster.
