Post Colonial Literature

Research Topic: Post-Colonial Literature –
Purpose: To read and analyze a Post-Colonial work of fiction.
When the people/s of Africa, India, the Caribbean, and Asia finally gained independence from the Europeans (British, French, Belgians, Germans… ) during the 20th century, they found that their national, cultural, and individual identities had been drastically changed through colonization. In this research paper, you will examine how authors have captured postcolonialism by reading a novel and secondary articles that address the historical, social, and political background of the time.
Postcolonial writers focus on three (3) areas:
1) Reclaiming Spaces and Places to restore connections between indigenous people and their native land through description, narration and dramatization;
2) Asserting Cultural Identity to restore pride in indigenous practices/traditions;
3) Revising History to relate narratives from the point of view of those who were colonized.
Research Question(s) – Choose one (1):
1. How does the literary text, explicitly or allegorically, represent various aspects of colonial oppression?
2. What does the text reveal about the problematics of post-colonial identity, including the relationship between personal and cultural identity and such issues as double consciousness and hybridity?
3. What person(s) or groups does the work identify as “other” or stranger? How are such persons/groups described and treated?
4. What does the text reveal about the politics and/or psychology of anti-colonialist resistance?
5. What does the text reveal about the operations of cultural difference – the ways in which race, religion, class, gender, sexual orientation, cultural beliefs, and customs combine to form individual identity – in shaping our perceptions of ourselves, others, and the world in which we live?
