Reckoning essay (Scholarly Review)

[ad_1]
MLA 8 formatFor this essay, you are asked to develop a rich, reflective reading of one of four assigned essays (written by professional essayists). You are required not only to evaluate the primary essay’s persuasiveness and to deepen readers’ understanding of its problem/idea, but also to reckon with the whole of the source essay, as you put it in conversation with other related evidence. In other words: your essay should reflect on the ideas of the original essay you chose. You must do this reflective reckoning in the context of other evidence (written and/or experiential). You must do this reflective reckoning not only for its own sake but also for the sake of developing an idea of your own. And so, your writing task will be at least two-fold: (1.) to deepen our understanding of that primary source essay while letting us see you reflect on its ideas across the entire essay. (2.) to develop your own idea along with this reflective reckoning, an idea that emerges through your analysis of the primary essay. The goal of this assignment then, is a rigorous reading of a primary text in the context of other related, ancillary texts. From this rigorous reflective, analytical work you will develop and substantiate an idea of your own in a demanding academic essay.Four assigned essays are: 1. “Shooting An Elephant” by George Orwell 2. “Stranger in the Village” by James Baldwin 3. “On Seeing England for the First Time” by Jamaica Kincaid 4. “The World is Flat” by Thomas Friedman.Basically, you need to choose a main essay out of these four. Then, an accurate representation of the essay is require. But most importantly, you need to come up with a thoughtful idea or question and use as many evidences as possible to support your idea. Other three essays (besides the main one) are used as ancillary texts to support your idea. Brief representation of those three essays are also needed if you use them as evidence. The four essays are essential for the essay. However, you can also use other evidence beyond the four essays to support your idea.More detailed requirements are uploaded below. Only final draft is needed. However, requirements for exercise 1-3 and first and second draft can help you understand the requirement for the final draft.6-7 pages (not including work cited)
