A current situation from Global Health Now about displaced people is the Rohingya refugee crisis. The Rohingya people are considered being stateless and widely persecuted, facing ethnic cleansing by the Buddhist majority in Myanmar (Hassan, Smith, Walker, Rahman, & Southworth, 2018). To help address this issue, there is ongoing financial aid calling on European countries and other world humanitarian organizations including the government of Bangladesh to join forces and donate the amount of $ 950.5 million to provide life-saving assistance such as food, water, sanitation, shelter, and medical care to the refugees who fled Myanmar and are now residing in Bangladesh (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 2019). Faith-based organizations are helping to fill the gap of physically and mentally helping the refugees as well. Samaritan purse, one of the largest evangelical humanitarian aid organizations in the world is working with Rohingya Muslims to help ease their suffering physically and mentally while at the same time spreading the good news in the bible (Zaimov, 2017).
“Linking relief and development is an umbrella term which covers a multitude of ideas: the relief-development continuum and the interface between relief and development, relief development strategies and famine mitigation” (Ross, Maxwell, & Buchanan-Smith, 1994). The key to linking relief and development from the development point of view is to find ways to solve the root cause of the problem, which will in turn reduce the need for emergency relief, and then policies will be implemented to foster development. In the case of the Rohingya crisis, relief and development are linked to ending the refugee crisis by allowing the refugees to return to Myanmar, which will end the refugee crisis and granting them full citizenship which will give them full human rights and then, jointly implement policies which will enable them to work with the Myanmar government, thus contributing to development.
Displaced populations experience substantial health challenges when they are displaced. For this population to experience sustainable health promotion and development, health policies should be put in place by host countries to encourage basic health screening and vaccine administration when entering a refugee camp. This will help to stop the spread of common contagious diseases and those with chronic conditions can be provided suitable care. This would ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, n.d.).
