Do you think people are getting smarter why or why not:
There are different types of intelligences. If one kind of intelligence remains used for generations, the probably the gene responsible for the intelligence might fall in quality and spread
If there is greater need for a particular kind of intelligence and opportunities also favour the intelligence, the there is a possibility that
The genes responsible for that kind may get stronger and find more spread
The mix of intelligences that makes a person to be considered smarter in a generation may be different from the mix of intelligence required to be considered smart in some other generation ie different generations require different intelligent mix
Now if we consider a mix of intelligences like maths, spatial memory etc. A person who scores high in these is considered smarter and has a better IQ. Opportunities in terms of better health, better education etc and necessities in industries and employment favour the increase in such forms of intelligence. So by these terms we can assume people are getting smarter
Because of exposure and opportunities people are also getting good not only at one intelligence but in multiple intelligences.
Also exposure and knowledge make them become smarter at handling day to day issues which have remained a part and parcel of a human life for centuries
Hence we conclude people are getting smarter
2. Which of the factors explain Flynn effect?
Heterosis- mating between distinct sub populations results in robust and strong genes. Rising urbanization favours heterosis
Nutrition – improvements in the quantity and/or quality of food
Medical science- -Improvements in quality and access to, health care
Education- Improvements in the nature of, and access to, both formal and informal methods of cognitive training.
Test-taking attitude – children today are more risk taking and attempt high risk IQ questions
Practice effects- Children today take more IQ-type tests and acquire test-taking strategies. Or they having already seen similar questions on previous tests
Selection- If high-IQ individuals were to have more children and/or have their children at a younger age, and then the frequency of IQ-increasing genes would rise over time, causing scores to increase.
Smaller families: couple with fewer children are able to focus their resources and get more opportunities for their children
Genomic imprinting- increased environmental stimuli may have a effect on brain
The Dickens–Flynn model: two factors account- environment factors affects IQ and social multiplier effect- the IQ of others in a population affects the IQ of an individual
3. Does it undermine the theory that IC is inherited ? why or why not
No. the Flynn effect is just a complement the theory that IQ is also inherited.
Flynn effect- the increase in IQ scores over generations
Intelligence is explained by two factors-
Genetic-Intelligence is transmitted genetically. It remains potential.
Environmental- To realize the intelligence, we need environmental factors- opportunities, necessities for the intelligence and tools/techniques. Improving environmental conditions and social multiplier factor contribute to realizing the potential of the intelligence. Such improvements over the generations explain the Flynn effect.
Flynn effect undermines the theory only if it can prove that environmental components alone determine the intelligence. But it has never done so anywhere .
