Suppose that your company was hiring information systems technicians and wants to develop a method for selecting job applicants with the highest potential for doing well on the job. What type of information from the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) could be useful in setting up this selection system?

The O*NET could provide the possible occupations which closely matches the description of the information system technicians. It also provides a detailed list of the following which can be mapped against the candidate profile to select the right candidates:
Tasks handled and requirement of the job.
Relevant technology skills required to do the job properly.
Preferred educational requirements required to do the job competently.
Cognitive skills needed for the job.
Abilities required in a successful candidate.
Knowledge of computer systems and other subjects required for the job.
List of tasks and activities required for the job and its match with the previous responsibilities and functions performed by the applicants in previous employment.
The above information can then be compared to each candidate’s profile and each parameter can be given a certain weightage to deduce the weighted score for each applicant. The applicant having the highest score is most likely to perform better than others on the job.
