2. (CONFLICT)
The plot of The Crucible consists of many battles between many opposites. In an explanatory essay,
identify one such opposite (or type of conflict: person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. society)
and explain why Arthur Miller includes it to support social commentary or theme.
3. (THEME)
A theme is an observational statement about a work that must be argued or supported. It can be studied through fiction as an abstract concept (a theme) that is made concrete through representation in person, conflict and outcome of events. For this prompt, choose a topic from your “Theme Exploration” sheet and create a thematic statement. Next, in the space below, argue why this thematic statement is important to the study of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
4. (SETTING)
Setting is an integral element of all literature. The time and place of a story determines much of the story’s essence. 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, is the setting of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. However, there are other settings, such as scene locations that also contribute to the story’s action and conflicts, as well as themes. In the space below, highlight a “setting” from The Crucible and explain the importance of this setting as to how it contributes to a conflict or character development within the play.
5. (CAUSE AND EFFECT)
The Crucible is a play that contains many tense and riveting scenes. The play unfolds as a series of events that continue to escalate and build upon each other. Because of the play’s structure, we studied the concept of Cause and Effect in literature. For this response, create an intentional and thoughtful examination of the events in Salem which determine the fate of ONE CHARACTER.
Questions to Consider: What is the outcome of the events? Why did Miller choose to have these events unfold in this specific order or manner?
