Layout designing goes a long way in determining the successful operation of an entity be it an office, factory, super market or warehouse.
I would take the example of an infant food industry and its warehouse layout design to stress on its importance in meeting its objective.
The infant food industry producing baby cereal food is a specialized industry where food safety and hygiene procedures are strictly followed. The storage of raw material as well as finished products are also to be safely stored in the warehouses adhering to food safety management protocols that includes temperature control and safety from rodents etc.
The warehouse layout for the industry is designed in two parts. The first part is to receive incoming raw material grains and their storage while the second part is to store the finished product in quarantine and then in dispatch area after clearance of laboratory tests.
The first part layout is relatively simple where the receiving bays are constructed for ease of receipt of food grain bags which are manually unloaded and stacked in the large warehouse segregated for different kinds of grains i.e. wheat, maize and soybeans. Thereafter bags of these grains are manually carried and poured into the cleaning section bins for onward processing of infant cereal food.
The second part of warehouse layout is more important and assists in smoother and faster operations of the factory. The finished product cartons slide out first to the quarantine section through conveyors. These are stored in the dedicated area till the product samples are tested in-house laboratories. Once the products are cleared they are moved to the dispatch area which is large and spacious. The stacking is done with adequate movement space and for convenient and swift loading operations at the loading bays.
The layout of warehouse thus helps the industry achieve its objectives i.e. safe storage of products and swift loading for onward dispatch to distributors and retailers.
