Action: Read the below peer discussion board posts and provide your classmate with feedback on your opinion of their position. Do you agree and why? Do you disagree and why? Replies to your class members’ are intended to move the discussion forward. Telling them that they simply did a good job is not acceptable. Statements like “I feel”, “I believe” and/or “I think” are difficult to measure and, highly, subjective. Asking a question or two about the position they took will move the discussion forward. Of what benefit is employee coaching, and is it different from mentoring?

Effective coaching is one of the most important functions a manager can perform. Coaching helps to empower employees rather than control them. The coaching process encourages employees to “accept responsibility for their own performance” and helps to improve poor performance (Werner, 2017, p. 356). Another benefit of coaching is to improve communication and strengthen interactions between managers and their subordinates. Effective performance at the individual and team efforts will ultimately help the company achieve greater results.

Managers must be trained on techniques to provide effective coaching to their teams. This training is the responsibility of the HRD team. Coaching characteristics to develop are humility, warmth, self-confidence, moral values, optimism, and trustworthiness (Werner, 2017). While coaching training helps to professionally develop managers within an organization, an added benefit is that the skills learned can also be applied to help to improve their personal relationships.

The coaching provided by a Supervisor or Manager differs from the coaching provided by a mentor. A mentor can be anyone else inside or outside of an organization that can help teach an individual new skills or offer “life” advice. However, a mentor “lacks the information, opportunity, and authority” to effectively coach an employee to perform their tasks effectively within an organization (Werner, 2017, p. 356). The Supervisor has the responsibility to provide ongoing performance management support to encourage employees to perform optimally without coercion.

In my career, I have had the privilege to have few mentors from whom I would refer to as my “personal coaches”. These mentors have provided me with personal and professional advice and have helped me navigate through some of the most difficult challenges I have encountered throughout my career. For example, one helped me make the decision that it was acceptable for me to want to leave a company we both worked for in order to pursue a new challenge. I have never asked my mentors for help on how I could perform better at my job. I always have those conversations with my direct Supervisor. It is important for me to ensure that I receive adequate coaching, including feedback and support, from my Supervisor so that I am consistently encouraged to help myself, my team and our company succeed. If I don’t feel I am receiving the support I need, I may find myself seeking advice from one of my mentors for how to navigate that difficult conversation with my Supervisor.
