The human resource management can contribute significantly for the strategic sustainability efforts of an organization as the sustainability is not possible without focusing on the employees. Strategic sustainability can be achieved by giving importance to environment while driving the business for profit. The sustainable efforts will also help the organization to recruit right skilled people and improve on employee retention. The newly hired should posses strong team work and collaboration skills and the candidates should be informed about the organizations efforts towards environment protection which would help the applicants to prepare themselves along with the strategies.
Innovations play an important role in ensuring strategic sustainability and the human resource management should be able to motivate the employees with innovative skills to ensure that the organization has better talents. Recruitment, employee orientation, determining compensation, conducting trainings, and employee performance evaluations are major functions of human resource management and these activities plays an important role in developing as well as retaining the employees in the organization.
Whenever there is a strategic decision taken by the organization to ensure sustainability, human resource management need to inform the employees regarding the changes and convince them the need for implementing the changes. The long term benefits should be explained to the employees else the employees will not be ready to follow the changes if any extra work is involved. HRM needs to ensure proper communication strategies to communicate the need and benefits involved in adopting the new sustainability practices. HRM needs to ensure employee engagement in the firm’s effort to achieve strategic sustainability. The employees should be ready to accept the changes and implement those in their life.
HRM should conduct the necessary training programs to provide guidance to the employees regarding sustainability efforts and ensure employee commitment. The training given to the employees with the necessary materials would guide the employees on how to achieve sustainability and what are the roles and responsibilities of each employee. The newly hired people should be given training on the core values organization is trying to protect and the environmental programs adopted to ensure sustainability.
The HRM can help the organizations sustainability efforts by adopting suitable policies and practices and strict policies would ensure that all the employees as well as the other stakeholders follows the same. Good policies related to the sustainability would help to ensure increased morale, higher productivity and reduced employee turnover and this helps to increase the business benefits along with environment protection.
Once the sustainability efforts are in place, the HRM need to measure the performance of the organizations against the goals set. The HRM implement the tools and techniques that would help to measure the performance. The performance measurement helps to understand to what extend the organization has succeeded in achieving strategic sustainability. The feedbacks should be given to the employees on performance and areas of improvement and high performing employees should be provided with rewards and recognitions to motivate the employees and increase their contribution towards sustainability which will also ensure growth of the organization.
