GRADED ASSIGNMENT: Analytical Essay #1: “The Moons of August”
Instructions
We are now at the midpoint of the summer session. It’s time to showcase your strongest critical thinking, research and writing skills to complete a 4-page double spaced analytical essay, plus a Works Cited page that follows the MLA format guidelines.
Imagine you are nominating Danusha Lameris’s book The Moons of August for a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, the most prestigious award in the United States.
Your formal nomination essay should begin with a clear thesis statement identifying the main reasons the book should win the Pulitzer Prize. The body of your essay should include analysis and quotes from at least 4 poems in The Moons of August and additional evidence supporting your thesis.
Your essay should include at least 3 of these types of evidence:
direct quotes or paraphrases from 4 poems in the book
biographical information about Danusha Lameris
historical or political background information
other poets’ and literary critics’ thoughts
your own life experience that connects to the poems
Be sure to cite all sources in a Works Cited page that follows the MLA format guidelines. Aim for at least 3-4 different sources: articles, interviews, other Pulitzer Prize winning poets, etc. Consult pages 984-986 of our textbook if you need a reminder of the MLA format guidelines.
How to Submit
Save your file as a Word doc or pdf.
Select the Submit Assignment link.

Evaluation
This writing assignment will be graded on a scale of 0-100. Scores will be based on the grading rubric in the course syllabus.
