Introduction- This case is regarding an American multinational information technology company known as the Hewlett- Packard Company(HP) which has developed a lot of hardware and software components. The company has the tremendous ability to execute a complex structural change which is proved by the successful integration of Application 8.4.
Background- HP was found in the year 1939 and since then, it is continuously implementing successful major organizational changes. Today, it has become a leading Computer company from a small instrument business. HP electronics and computer business had adopt a lot of technological and organizational change during its journey. Lewis Platt, the CEO of HP announced in 1993 about the convergence of several technologies like wireless communication, printing, measurement etc. This company has specialized in developing and manufacturing computing, data storage, networking hardware and designing software.
Alternatives- Former CEO of HP, John Young focussed on the coordinated efforts among the different component divisions and market shares to encourage software programmers. Young divided the instruments divisions into one group and all the computer divisions in another group. He also centralized research, marketing and manufacturing.
Proposed solution- All these these things created problems in the production of the company. The company’s new graphics printer stopped working with its HP3000mini-computer. At the same time, the operating system did not allow the two pieces of hardware to interface. In order to find out the solution of these problems, two committees were formed to develop the new technologies and to neglect the old ones. But it does not work properly. So, john Young divided the computer business into two groups: one for handling the personal computers and other for handling sales of mini computers in the market. Due to the result, HP started gaining profit in the market. New CEO has focussed on the use of various technologies. All these efforts give a huge success to the organization.
Recommendations- In the year 1999, Carly Fiorin, the new CEO of HP, implemented a structure to support the company and launched a marketing campaign to build up HP brand. The structural change merged four major products divisions in to a group that look after computing and the other group focussed on printing. In the year 2001, Fiorina announced the intended acquisition of compaq computers.
