Hello this is for my business professionlism class discussion please help. Carefully consider the scenarios in the discussion threads I’ve started below. These are all REAL situations that students have shared in some form (I have altered them a bit to protect privacy). I Dilemma In the salon where you work, stylists have access to many products and managers are not always there to see who uses what products. Co-workers have taken products home to use and said that it is part of working for the salon and they don’t get paid enough so they don’t see any harm in borrowing the product. Besides, it will allow them to see how the product actually works over a period of time and they can recommend it to clients.

In today’s competitive world, when survival itself is a challenge, owing to the intensity of the competition, one really cannot separate Ethics from Professionalism. It is a very integral part of it. In this regard, if the salon’s products get exhausted before time, then it will only cause a pressure over the stock of the goods so stored to meet the future demands at the salon. On the other side, such an unethical behavior of the stylists themselves, may just be an alarm that something more unwarranted incident is yet to happen inside the salon. The habit of picking up salon products for personal use by the stylists is also cautioning in the sense that there is a line of difference between ‘borrowing’ and ‘stealing’. Borrowing happens when such Stylists seek a legitimate permission of the Manager or the owners, before carrying those products for their personal use. If this act is justified by saying that they are under-paid, then the time is not far when this action may inflate to taking away the personal belongings of the customers, over a period of time and in such a case, it shall be difficult to pin-point the onus of the Stylists for the known fact that they have the tendency to do so otherwise as well.
Hence, the only way to justify their act and to ensure that they are given a bonafide certificate for their professionalism, would be to let the Stylists know in clear terms that should they have any issues regarding their pay structure, they need to approach the manager for the same. In addition, if any such act is brought to the notice of the management, the stylists may be debarred from working at the Salon as it may be concerning even for the customers. Also, they shall be penalized by asking for the replacement of the salon product with a new one or to be paid the fine equivalent to the market price of the product so taken away by the stylists for their use without permission.
If the employees do not adhere to the ethical way of working then the survival of the salon shall be in danger in the long run and hence stern action needs to be taken against them while if the matter is indeed linked to underpayment of salaries to the stylists, then certain considerations upon those lines also needs to be pondered upon by the management so that such unethical practices are rooted out completely from the system.
