Write a three page (900+ words) argument in which you take a position on an issue you have direct experience with. PLEASE DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES. Use personal experience as evidence.
Defend your position with three reasons, plus evidence to back up each of those reasons.
Remember to consider the opposing side’s argument, and to refute (answer) it.
List your audience–those who disagree with your claim–at the top of your essay, after the title.
IMPORTANT: Read the sample argument essay that follows these directions (scroll down), and follow the template: include your claim at the end of the introduction, and give three numbered reasons. This is to ensure that you can write a solid claim and reasons, as well as organize your argument for maximum impact.
For this assignment, as with all others, type your response in Word or other word-processing program, and save your file in .doc, or .docx, file type (no .wps or .odt, please). Follow manuscript form in formatting your paper, as detailed in the Content link “HOW TO FORMAT YOUR ESSAYS.”

Here’s an example of a claim and reasons arguing the Internet is a good form of educational entertainment:
Claim and reasons: Communicating via the Internet is a good form of educational entertainment because it promotes worldwide friendship and learning about other cultures, it creates a level playing field for people to discuss their hobbies and interests, and it is an inexpensive and effective way to express oneself.
You may write about the Internet for this paper, but if so, formulate your own original claim about some aspect of the Internet.
The main point of this assignment is to practice giving critical thought to some element of your everyday world that you hadn’t previously considered formally. This assignment does not require any research–in fact, I ask that you pick a topic that you have direct experience with, so you can include your own experience as evidence. PLEASE DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES. The best topics for this assignment are ones you already know enough about so that you won’t get bogged down doing research.
Overly-discussed topics like abortion, gun control, cell phone usage while driving, benefit of athletics and exercise, college athletics should pay athletes, any topics related to lowering drinking age, or any other such “over-discussed” topic and/or one about which you cannot offer direct personal experience are not suitable for this assignment.
Sample Essay:
The following is an essay to show you the basic format to follow for your own essay.
Follow the numbered-reason format as an aid in organizing your reasons. (This assignment only.)
Notice that the claim is the title of my essay, and is also given again (with supporting reasons) at the end of the first paragraph. (Note the “claim” can also be thought of as a “thesis statement,” which is the term more often used in Comp. I).
Note that the sample essay you’ll read below is NOT in manuscript format; it’s in “Internet format”: paragraphs aren’t indented, body is single-spaced with double spacing between paragraphs. This style is preferred for writing that appears online, but for your essays in this course, use double-spacing and other MLA manuscript guidelines, as shown in the “HOW TO FORMAT YOUR ESSAYS” link in Unit 1. You are free to indent your numbered reasons or leave them at the left margin.
The Internet Provides a Good Form of Alternative Education
Audience: People who dislike the Internet or think it is just “fluff” entertainment, and people who haven’t yet formed a strong opinion on its value.
Tales of teen girls meeting dirty old men in chat rooms (and then meeting them in person), web pages that are devoid of cultural or educational value, and the popularity of cheap pornographic sites all contribute to a feeling among a segment of the U.S. that the Internet is the “devil’s window.” Despite this, the Internet has become, in the last fifteen years, an extremely popular source of entertainment and information. But that’s not all–the Internet is also a good form of alternative education. Besides the fact that online courses for credit are quickly becoming an established part of formal college and high school students’ lexicon, there are three main ways the Internet can educate and help us pursue better lives outside formal courses for credit: it promotes learning about other cultures, it provides a convenient way to continue one’s informal education, and it offers an inexpensive and effective way to express oneself. Let’s look at each of these in more detail.
1. The Internet promotes learning about other cultures.
In the eighteen years I’ve been surfing the Internet, I’ve “met” people from Japan, England, Norway, Iceland, Czechoslovakia, to name a few. I’ve discussed issues in depth with these people, or sometimes just said “hi,” but either way, the experience is invaluable because it makes me feel a part of the global community, at a grassroots level. To learn is to understand, and when we understand others, we are living as humans are meant to live, peaceably and productively. The Internet provides a unique and simple way to meet people from other cultures. The only two other methods I can think of where one could make the same connections worldwide are through exchange student programs or traditional penfriend clubs where people exchange snail mail letters. The first option takes extra time, money, and commitment (more than I’m willing to give, quite frankly), and the second option is inconvenient, in that one has to actually put pen to paper to write a letter. With the Internet, I log on, and after a minute or two, I click and send a message to someone on the other side of the world. How great is that?
2. The Internet creates a level playing field for people to discuss their hobbies and interests.
I’m sure you have interests that you’d like to discuss with others, but in reality we all have limitations that prevent face-to-face meetings. Maybe you live in a remote area, maybe you’re not socially inclined, maybe your budget doesn’t allow for gas to travel to meetings. Once again, the Internet is a great alternative. I’m the member of several online groups, in the areas of creative writing, film, and gardening, three of my interests. The writing and film groups I belong to are especially important to me. I’ve “met” other writers and artists who live all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe, many of whom are producing and sharing their work online, as I also do. The level of intelligence I encounter is so high that I look at these groups as extending my college education. The groups inspire me to write more, read more, and open my mind. And I never have to worry about what I look like, what I’m wearing, how well I speak, or how my personality comes across to others. The Internet is truly the great “equalizer.” Again, I can’t think of any other way I could achieve this level of fair, equal, and worldwide connection to other people who share my views and interests. 3. The Internet is an inexpensive and effective way to express oneself.
As a writer, I’ve often felt frustrated by the need to share my stories with others bumping up against my lack of motivation to pursue the old-fashioned publishing route, of sending out a manuscript to publishers, only to receive rejection slip after rejection slip. The Internet allows writers, artists, and many other creative people enjoy an alternative to the old-fashioned publishing routes. Rather than sending out work to publishers who can quell one’s motivation, artists, writers, and musicians can now upload their work for the world to read, see, or hear, virtually free of charge (and with no rejection slips!). And contrary to what one may think, the work that writers and artists are putting online, on their own, is generally high quality. It may be work that doesn’t fit the “mainstream” (which is often second-rate anyway) or work that short-sighted publishers cannot justify as potentially making a profit. But with the almighty dollar removed from the equation, the truly free and democratic society our founding fathers foresaw actually exists on the Internet–anyone can put their ideas out there. And as we should all recognize, just because an idea isn’t popular (or profitable) doesn’t mean it isn’t valid.
There will always be people who don’t see the value of the Internet–perhaps they are too closed-minded to consider what it has to offer; perhaps they haven’t explored it fully enough to find anything there for them. But to dismiss it as the “devil’s window” or a waste of time is unfair. For the intellectually curious, there’s almost too much information to be had on the Internet. The problem isn’t finding information of value, but finding the time to explore it fully.
