This is actually a Marketing Question, but it is not an option. Why has GE divested itself of most of its consumer businesses?

The downfall of the GE was a result of the global recession and the similar activities that most American companies faced during the first decade of 20th century. The pressure of external environment creates a slowdown in the economy which in turn created slowdown which affects the said company.
The company General electric which was started as an engineering firm and adopted a core business based on the development of engineering, industrial and scientific product. However, the company expended by diversifying into new industries such as finance, consumer durables etc
Divesture of the company’s consumer business is result of the company’s strategy to focus on the core business of the company i.e. engineering. Removing the consumer business of the company will allo general electric to keep focus on the core business and develop them in a better way.
